My Life in A Nutshell

As most of you know, I’ve been gone for a couple of weeks taking care of my mom. First she had a stroke the middle of January and was in two hospitals and a rehab hospital before we could get her to her assisted living apartment. Almost two weeks ago (on Monday) her went to her regular Doc. and he ordered another MRI scan be done since she had been bleeding on the brain. Unfortunately it had grown and I had to rush her to the hospital Tuesday night for brain surgery Wednesday. The had to shave half of her hair off (she didn’t like that too much) and then bore two holes in her skull so that all the blood and fluid in that subdural hematoma could drain out…. then they stapled her scalp back together. She was totally out of it the day of the surgery ~ Wednesday of last week.

If you have ever dealt with someone with a severe brain injury or brain surgery, then you know it’s a roller-coaster ride for sure. For about 4 or 5 days she seemed to have a split personality, a regular mom one and another one that thought I was hateful. It was so hard to hear her say those things to me, but I knew logically that it was the brain injury making her talk like that… still hurt though.

The healthcare system seems to have completely fallen off a cliff as far as I’m concerned. If I had not had my sister (who is a cardiac nurse in North Carolina come) and my daughter, who is a Nurse Practioner who lives about 45 minutes from here, I probably would have had a breakdown. (If you don’t know what a Nurse Practioner is, they are one step above a PA… they are like a Family Practice doctor but they don’t deliver babies… but general Practice Docs. don’t either anymore 99% of the time)

Each doctor has their speciality and her neuro-surgeon was great except that he didn’t know anything about Physical therapy so they kept trying to discharge her to go back to her apartment. She couldn’t even walk!!!  And then they have “Hospitalist” who are doctors like your regular Family Practice doc. except about half of the docs have privileges at only one of the several hospitals around here – so her Family Practice Doc couldn’t come to check on her. Somehow, the Hospitalist doc walked in Monday and said she would be discharged back to her apt. again. AGAIN, no one taking into consideration that she couldn’t even walk Saturday night. Somehow they thought a miracle had happened Sunday and she was cured.

Obviously, I have been practically living at the hospital for the last couple of weeks to be sure she was taken care of properly. (My whole family, cousins etc. are 90% Medical degrees – docs etc. in other states) Somehow she fell between the cracks and just didn’t have a doctor for about 3 days till I pitched a fit Wed. afternoon late. Her Blood Pressure kept dropping and it was 68/47…. The finally paged the doctor (Hospitalist) and he came by (apparently they work 7 days on and 7 off) and it was his first day on. He was shocked the other doc had not checked on her Mon. or Tues. and didn’t tell him that she was his patient Wed. till my fit. He was the greatest guy (from India – wonderful Doctor) and he gave her meds and ordered a cardiologist to see her.

TODAY she is FINALLY being moved to the Rehab. Hospital for a week or two so maybe I’ll have time to get back my life. I’ve missed reading everyone’s blogs…

I’ve gotten several awards that I need to respond to also.  Please don’t think I’m ignoring you, I have just been so busy. I promise I will post them just as soon as I can! :D  It is a great honor for you to think of me…. I’ll try to get to that tomorrow or Sunday.

Thanks again to everyone for the prayers, mom is back to her one personality self… which is WONDERFUL to see and I’m very grateful for.

Hope to see you all soon…. Will leave you with some pictures or posters I liked, just so I won’t be so boring… LOL

  1. I completely understand. I tried to figure out how to get my pain and some other issues I was having. so they sent me to a shrink for depression. I am a diabetic and it took three years a bunch of x-rays before some one actually thought to consult a neurologist and another year and a half including the suggestion of getting physical therapy for them to figure out I had been having seizures. It’s not epilepsy and my brain is healthy (no cancer) but after five years I finally have an inkling of what’s wrong. Now I have to find the cause. Doctor’s have their heads up their powdered derrieres about basic medicine. I think the reason has everything to do with money, and nothing to do with their Intellligence, so they play stupid while making us think what we are mistaken about what we know is true about our own health.

    • Thanks Laurie :D I’m doing my best. As my grandmother use to say, “When you’re on the bottom, there is no where to go but up” LOL. Thanks for dropping by! Your words of encouragement are appreciated!

    • Thank you so much! Some days she seems stronger and then others her RBC drops to 8 or so. I’m not sure how that happens, but I guess it just goes along with her Meylodisplasia (sp?) I appreciate your kind thoughts and wishes! :D

    • Thank you Leanne! I am really tired but we aren’t quite where I can leave her yet. The brain surgery last week was a set back, but hopefully rehab will be shorter this time. Thank you for your prayers and kind words! I’ve missed your blogs so much.. but hope to be able to go back and catch up on everyones. :D

    • Thank you Benjamin! Sorry to be late in sending out Thanks… been super busy chasing my mom from hospital to hospital. Personally, I can’t wait till she gets back to her little apartment. Hope you are well also! Thanks for thinking of me as well. The caretakers often wear themselves down and then they start to have problems.
